i have an Elmo FPC projector having trouble playing 2-3 min reels...do i need to wind the film onto a bigger spool for balance or...???

Do you mean you get to a certain point and the film just stops moving?
Different sized reels are OK. The only important rule is that capacity of the takeup reel must be equal to or larger than the length of the film you're showing!

the film does not seem to "lock up" and it eventualy stops altogether, then if i put a bigger reel on it is ok !
so then i wound the little reel onto a bigger spool and tried that to no avail !

I'm not completely clear what you mean by "the film does not seem to 'lock up'"
Have you checked the belts on the projector?
